About Smith Connection
The Smiths of the Cape Sable Island area of Nova Scotia, Canada are descended from Archelaus Smith who emigrated there in 1760.Apparently these fishermen dried their fish in that area after the French inhabitants were expelled and decided to move closer to the fishing grounds. Archelaus's ancestry can be traced back to England through Ralph Smith who Emigrated to Hingham Mass. and Stephen Hopkins who emigrated on the Mayflower to Plymouth, Mass. Archelaus' wife was a Nickerson from Chatham on Cape Cod. Over the years since their move from Cape Cod there has been much mixing of the Smith and Nickerson families with some Doane, Crowell, Atwood etc thrown in here and there. In my case my father and mother were both Smiths. Since my father's line came from Wood's Harbour he claimed he wasn't related to my mother who was descended from Archelaus. It appears that both lines can be traced back to Archelauses' father Stephen Smith. It turns out that I am three quarters purebred Smith. A fact which I don't know if I should be proud of or ashamed of.
